Uwe Alzen wins ahead of Dirk Werner - championship decision comes at season final
Stuttgart. Uwe Alzen (Germany) won the eighth and penultimate round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland in Le Mans, with British guest driver Richard Westbrook and Dirk Werner (Germany) securing the remaining podium places respectively. Taking up the 20-lap sprint from pole position, Alzen won the sprint to the first corner against Dirk Werner, who had started from the first row in second. In the closing phase of the race Alzen successfully defended his lead against a determined attack from Westbrook.Richard Lietz (Austria) did not manage to convert his fourth in qualifying into a corresponding race result. In the first lap the Austrian was forced to pit for a new rear tyre after it was damaged in a clash with the 911 of Chris Mamerow (Germany). Lietz saw the flag in 23rd, whilst Mamerow crossed the finish line in fourth position.
Kelvin Burt yielded his best result to date in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland claiming sixth behind Joerg Hardt (Germany). 2006 marks the first season in the one-make series for the British touring car specialist.
In the drivers championship Dirk Werner maintains his lead. With today's victory, Uwe Alzen closes the gap to the leader to 13 points. Richard Lietz leaves Le Mans without points and subsequently drops back to rank fifth behind Mamerow and Hardt. The fight for the title, now between Werner and Alzen, will be decided at the final round of the Carrera Cup Deutschland held on the Hockenheimring on 29 October.
Uwe Alzen (winner): "I drove that race at the limit from the first to the last metre. Dirk was always within striking distance. Richard Westbrook put incredible pressure on me but there was no way I was letting him past - even when he can't earn points. I didn't travel to Le Mans to come second.”
Dirk Werner (third): "There was no doubt for me - my top priority today was not to risk a thing. That's why I didn't go hell for leather against Uwe at the start. For me, securing second today puts me in a perfect position for the final.”
