Chris Mamerow wins second race on the Persian Gulf
Stuttgart. At the second championship round of the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup, Chris Mamerow from Germany claimed his first win of the season. The 23-year-old new-comer to the world’s fastest international one-make cup took up the race from third on the grid. In lap three he grabbed the front position from the leading Jeroen Bleekemolen (Netherlands) and René Rast (Germany), and never let it go for the remainder of the 12-lap sprint. Following the first two championship races, Mamerow ranks second in the drivers’ standings.At the top of the championship table is former DTM pilot Jeroen Bleekemolen, who took the flag in second. The 26-year-old Dutchman contests his first full Porsche Mobil1 Supercup season in 2008. Last year he secured three wins and climbed the podium five times. Third went to 20-year-old René Rast, after an impressive debut in Bahrain: In qualifying, Rast posted pole position for both rounds and claimed a podium result from race two. In the first race on Saturday, he experienced technical problems with his car’s power train and was unable to compete.
Behind the three top drivers, countless fights for positions raged. For much of the time Nicolas Armindo (France) held fourth position. In the final lap the Frenchman had to forfeit his advantage with deteriorating tyres. Armindo saw the chequered flag in sixth behind Uwe Alzen (Germany) and Jan Seyffarth (Germany) in fourth and fifth respectively.
Seventh place went to Danny Watts from Great Britain, trailed by Sebastiaan Bleekemolen (Netherlands) and David Saelens (Belgium) in eighth and ninth. Damien Faulkner (Ireland), the winner of the season-opening round yesterday, rounded off the top ten. The 30-year-old had taken up the race from fifth on the grid but had lost several positions at the start.
Dr. Hubert Lang, ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bahrain, handed the winners their trophies.
Chris Mamerow (winner): “I had somewhat hoped that things would run well for me today. The start was extremely important. I didn’t lose any positions but could perhaps have won some more. It doesn’t matter. Everything ran perfectly, the car was fantastic. After I got past the two at the front I was able to put some distance between us. I am more than happy. This win is extremely important and great motivation for the next race.”
Jeroen Bleekemolen (second): “Second place and the lead of the championship – great! I hadn’t counted on it happening so soon. Things are looking good for me. The race was great fun and the fight with René was fair. We touched slightly at one point but both reached the finish line safely.”
René Rast (third): “I’m sorry for hitting Jeroen. That shouldn’t have happened. Still, I’m very pleased with my race and the weekend. My team and I had never thought we’d secure a podium result in Bahrain. This is a fantastic start in the Supercup. I’m totally happy with third and mostly I’m proud of my two pole positions.”
