René Rast celebrates first win of the season
Stuttgart. René Rast (Germany) secured his first win of the year at the first round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland on the Hockenheimring. The 21-year-old pilot racing for the MRS Team PZ Aschaffenburg, which contests its second season in Europe’s fastest one-make series, took up the race from pole position and defended his lead to reach the chequered flag first after 18 laps.Chris Mamerow (Germany) took the flag in second just two-tenths of a second behind the winner. Driving for the Mamerow Racing PZ Essen team, the 23-year-old attacked the front-running Rast over the entire distance, looking for his chance to snatch the lead position. Lap after lap, the pair delivered a gripping duel in the hairpin of the 4.57 kilometre Hockenheimring circuit. In outbraking manoeuvres, Mamerow pulled alongside Rast a total of five times, with Rast always managing to take the lead again at the exit of the corner.
Behind René Rast and Chris Mamerow, Nicolas Armindo (France) climbed the podium in third. Armindo, who ranked third in the series last year, had taken up the 18-lap sprint from sixth on the grid and immediately catapulted up to third after the start. After Joerg Hardt (Germany, HP Team Herberth PZ Olympiapark) spun and retired in the fourth lap, Armindo moved into third and held on to this position to the flag. Finishing behind the ARAXA RACING PZ Reutlingen pilot, Jan Seyffarth (Germany, SMS Seyffarth Motorsport) crossed the finish line in fourth.
Fifth place went to Patrick Huisman (Netherlands). The quadruple record-champion of the international Porsche Mobil1 Supercup piloted the 911 GT3 Cup run by Hermes Attempto Racing PZ Nuremberg. Pascal Kochem (Germany) and Alex Davison (Australia) finished the first of nine championship rounds ranking sixth and seventh.
The UPS-Porsche Junior Martin Ragginger (Austria) planted his racing sports car on ninth position behind Jiri Janak (Czech Republic). At his first Porsche race ever, the former DTM pilot Christian Abt (Germany) brought his car home in tenth position.
The next championship round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland takes place this coming Sunday (20th April) in the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben.
René Rast (winner): “That was a fantastic race. I stood on pole, made a superb start and held on to the lead. The duel with Chris was great fun. But by the end I was very pleased to cross the finish line first.”
Chris Mamerow (second): “René drove a clever race. I was actually the faster of us two, but I didn’t find the opportunity to get past him. We had a great and fair fight. It was fun. Next weekend is another story: new race, new chance.”
Nicolas Armindo (third): “Third is a good result for the first round. I’m happy with this. Compared to the front two I was somewhat slower in the race. But we’re not far away from the top. We just need to make a few changes before Oschersleben and we’ll be right up there.”
