Jan Seyffarth wins ahead of juniors Ragginger and Holzer
Stuttgart. The action-packed seventh round of the Carrera Cup Deutschland turned into a festival of the UPS-Porsche juniors. Jan Seyffarth (Germany), as a former junior driver, celebrated victory. The 22-year-old from the SMS Seyffarth-Motorsport team climbed to the top of the podium, after securing his first win of the season two weeks ago in Zandvoort. With another 20 points to his credit, the youngster now becomes a serious aspirant for the championship title. The two current members of Porsche and UPS’s support programme for talented young race drivers, 20-year-old Martin Ragginger (Austria) and 19-year-old Marco Holzer (Germany), celebrated a brilliant second and third respectively. In the final third of the race, Holzer trailed his team mate with a gap of less than one second. For the two youngsters, this marked their best result of the season – and for Holzer at just his tenth race with the 420 hp Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.The fiercely-contested race not only delighted spectators – with the gap between the two front-runners diminishing, suspense increases leading up to the final two races of this year’s Carrera Cup. René Rast (Germany, MRS Team PZ Aschaffenburg) now leads with 109 points ahead of Chris Mamerow (Germany, Mamerow Racing PZ Essen) with 97 points and Seyffarth holding 96.
For the number one and two in the championship this is a race they will not forget in a hurry. After making a good get away at the start, Rast was overtaken by second qualifier Mamerow after just some 100 metres. Whilst attempting to retake his lead Rast shunted Mamerow’s car at the rear-left. The 23-year-old Mamerow spun on the track, was touched again and took up the race again from 30th and last in the field. Rast received a drive-through penalty for this, which relegated him to 17th. The pair then put in a strong charge through the field with René Rast finishing seventh and Chris Mamerow seeing the flag in eleventh.
Achieving his best result by far this season, Robert Renauer crossed the finish line in fourth. The 22-year-old German (Farnbacher Racing PZ Nürnberg) shows improving form, underlined in qualifying with his first top ten result. Twenty-two-year-old Lance David Arnold made an excellent start with his Mamerow team, bringing home a commendable fifth. The quadruple champion of the Supercup, Patrick Huisman (Netherlands, Hermes Attempto Racing PZ Nürnberg) yielded sixth and moved within striking distance of fifth place. Seventh went to Rast ahead of former DTM driver Thomas Jäger (Germany, Online Leasing Racing Team PZ Nürnberg). Ninth and tenth went to Jiri Janek (Czech Republic, Schnabl Engineering PZ Koblenz) and Rast’s team mate Mario Josten (Germany).
Jan Seyffarth (winner): “That was just awesome. My tactic was to keep out of trouble and it worked. At the start I had a fantastic fight with Uwe Alzen who was putting pressure on from behind but it stayed fair. Then I pulled away more and more until I had an eight second advantage. The most exciting thing about this of course is that I’m now well and truly back in the fight for the championship.”
Martin Ragginger (second): “I had a great start and managed to get past Marco. I then had a good clean tussle with Joerg Hardt. To keep up the pace I had to push really hard and I think I pushed the car a little too much. Marco caught up. The two of us pulled away from the rest of the field and brought home second and third. A huge thank you to our UPS-junior team!”
Marco Holzer (third): “I can hardly believe it. I’m absolutely thrilled to be on the podium. I actually lost a couple of positions at the start but made them up again. When I finally caught Martin we only had ten laps to go. I thought: oh no, stay cool and just don’t mess it up – we need the points for the whole team. My car ran like a dream today.”
Enthusiastic spectators were treated to another highlight on the Eifel circuit with the show race “World of Race Cars”. New and historic vehicles from different race categories gave an impressive show. One of the most spectacular cars was the Porsche RS Spyder flying the colours from the American Le Mans Series and piloted by reigning ALMS champion Timo Bernhard (Germany). “The race was great fun,” said the Porsche works driver. “You noticed as a driver how enthusiastic the fans were.” Also receiving hearty applause was the Porsche GT3 RSR which won the 24-hour-race on the Nordschleife at the end of May. Martin Ragginger drove the car for Manthey Racing.
The eighth and penultimate round of the 2008 Carrera Cup Deutschland takes place on 21st September in Barcelona (Spain).
