Seyffarth wins ahead of Holzer and Rast – championship still wide open
Stuttgart. The penultimate round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland turned into an all-German youth festival. Driving for his team SMS Seyffarth-Motorsport, Jan Seyffarth (22 years) brought home victory. Second went to UPS-Porsche-Junior Marco Holzer (20 years) ahead of points' leader René Rast (21 years) piloting his MRS Team PZ Aschaffenburg Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.Right from the start, former UPS-Porsche-Junior Seyffarth defended his lead position and reached the first corner in front. With an immaculate drive he left his opponents no chance on the 2.98 kilometre track close to Barcelona (Spain) and drove to victory. He controlled the race from the head of the field and held his position unchallenged over the 28-lap race. For Seyffarth this is his second flag-to-flag win on the Circuit de Catalunya this year. At the end of April the young hotspur secured victory here in the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup.
Marco Holzer achieved his best result of the season in Spain. The youngster from the support programme for young racing talents of UPS and Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, had taken up the race from second on the grid. In a fight for positions behind Seyffarth, Holzer defeated the current series' leader René Rast, who had started from third. Contesting his first season in Europe's fastest one-make series, the junior driver also gave his rivals no opportunity to overtake and received the flag in second. Like Seyffarth and Holzer, Rast also defended his starting position during the 28-lap sprint and claimed the last podium spot in Barcelona.
Holzer's team mate Martin Ragginger (Austria) delivered a spirited fight. The 20-year-old UPS-Porsche-Junior took up the race from fifth, outpaced Jiri Janak (Czech Republic, Schnabl Engineering PZ Koblenz) after the start and appeared in fourth after the first corner.
From lap 16, Ragginger, contesting his second year of the series, defended his position from Jiri Janak's constant attacks. Putting in a determined fight, Ragginger won the duel to cross the finish line in fourth.
Janak, however, came under pressure towards the end of the race from Nicolas Armindo (France, ARAXA RACING PZ Reutlingen) and Jörg Hardt (Germany, HP Team Herberth PZ Olympiapark). In their fight for fifth place, Janak and Armindo braked too late in lap 24 and Hardt whipped past. Two laps later, the 25-year-old Czech again experienced difficulties with his brakes and landed in the gravel. Hardt saw the flag in fifth followed by Armindo and Thomas Jäger (Germany, Online Leasing Racing Team PZ Nürnberg) in positions six and seven. Eighth went to the former UPS-Porsche-Junior Chris Mamerow (Germany, Mamerow Racing PZ Essen).
Heading to the final round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland on the Hockenheimring (26 October), the fight for the championship is still wide open. René Rast retains his points' lead with 125 points. Jan Seyffarth moves into second (116) followed by Chris Mamerow in third with 105 points.
Jan Seyffarth (winner): “Two pole positions and two wins – what more could you want when you come to Barcelona twice a year. That was a perfect race today. I didn't make any mistakes and kept a constant gap of one second to Marco. It couldn't have gone better. I've now moved into second in the championship. I'm just nine points short of René so anything is possible. My tactic in Hockenheim is full attack.”
Marco Holzer (second): “I still can't believe that my start actually worked. At one point I was alongside Jan – what a fabulous feeling. But I managed to suppress my enthusiasm and concentrate on the job at hand. From mid-race René put on the pressure. I didn't let myself feel intimidated and again concentrated on getting ahead. And second place is the result. That is the first time I've climbed the podium in second. I'm over the moon! It can continue like this.”
René Rast (third): “My race today was very relaxed. After the first corner I thought, 'Okay, you're in third, take in easy and don't risk anything.' That's what I did. Amongst the front-runners we were all driving a similar pace. I think I was even faster sometimes. Still, it doesn't matter. I was only interested in bringing third home. I'm happy with my result and head for the final in Hockenheim relaxed.”
