Marco Holzer takes first win, René Rast is champion
Stuttgart. The final of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland was the race of the youngsters. UPS-Porsche-Junior Marco Holzer (Germany, 20 years) secured a flag-to-flag win, celebrated his first Porsche win and claimed the overall victory in the team championship for his UPS-Porsche-Junior squad. Finishing fourth on his 22nd birthday was enough for René Rast (Germany) to take home championship honours. From start to finish, Holzer, the second youngest pilot in Europe’s fastest one-make series, defended his lead position. Putting in an immaculate drive, he gave his rivals no chance on the 4.57 kilometre circuit. Holzer, who contested his first year in the Carrera Cup and the junior support programme from UPS and Porsche, controlled the race from the head of the field over the 16 laps. For Marco Holzer this is his first ever victory at the wheel of the 420 hp Porsche 911 GT3 Cup and the first title win for the UPS-Porsche-Junior team since 2004. Holzer’s triumph and his young Austrian team mate Martin Ragginger’s eighth yielded the team title for their UPS-Porsche Junior team.
Rounding off the podium at the season final were Joerg Hardt (Germany) and last year’s champion Uwe Alzen (Germany), both competing for the HP Team Herberth PZ Olympiapark team. Until the fourth lap, Hardt and Alzen put Holzer under pressure, but had to back off to let the youngster cross the finish line first. Hardt (27) saw the chequered flag second followed by 41-year-old Alzen.
Points’ leader René Rast narrowly missed out on a podium result but still managed to give himself an unforgettable gift for his 22nd birthday: With fourth position, the German earned enough points to become the new champion of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland. Over the season, Rast climbed the podium at six out of nine races. On the way to winning the title, he claimed victory at the season-opener in Hockenheim and secured second position three times in his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup and third position twice.
Fifth and sixth at the final round went to Robert Renauer (Germany, Farnbacher Racing PZ Nürnberg) and Thomas Jäger (Germany, Online Leasing Racing Team PZ Nürnberg). Chris Mamerow (23, Germany) of Mamerow Racing PZ Essen saw the chequered flag in seventh and concluded his fifth Carrera Cup season in third overall. Jan Seyffarth (Germany), winner of three rounds, crossed the finish line ninth in Hockenheim. With this result, the 22-year-old former UPS-Porsche-Junior, who now drives for SMS Seyffarth-Motorsport, secured vice-championship honours and celebrated his greatest success so far in his racing career.
Marco Holzer (winner): “My first win in my first season – unbelievable. I was lucky enough to have a good start – which up to the Barcelona race had been a shortcoming of mine. Joerg and Uwe put me under a lot of pressure at the start. I was a little nervous so I just thought to myself – drive like in qualifying, always at the limit. It worked, but only because my team put a perfectly set-up car on the track for me today.”
Joerg Hardt (second): “I was totally unhappy with my start today. Otherwise things went well but it wasn’t quite enough to catch Marco. At one point Uwe let me pass because he realised I was quicker but I still couldn’t get Marco. He was simpy too quick.”
Uwe Alzen (third): “That was a great way to wind up the season. Luckily I climbed the podium and that has given me courage – the season was mixed. Holzer drove brilliantly today - simply perfect. My compliments. I realised I couldn’t catch Marco so I let Joerg overtake.”
René Rast (fourth and champion): “What a fantastic day. We worked so hard over the whole year. To claim the title on my birthday of all days is the best gift ever. I’m totally ecstatic that it all worked out. I drove a cautious race today, kept my nose out of any fights and drove for the championship. This is the highlight of my career!”
Martin Ragginger (eighth): “We achieved our goal today and that was to win the team title. I’m thrilled that Marco won today. My congratulations! I messed up my start and ended up eighth.”
