Jan Seyffarth contests home race as new points’ leader
Stuttgart. The race for the championship title of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland is turning into a four-way fight. Heading into the fifth of nine rounds on Sunday in the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, a driver quartet has pulled away from the rest of the field. Spearheading this group is former Porsche junior Jan Seyffarth, followed closely by ex-DTM pilots Thomas Jäger and Jeroen Bleekemolen as well as youngster Nicki Thiim. After the fourth round in Zandvoort, Jan Seyffarth is now the new points’ leader. The young charger laid the foundations for this back at the season-opening round of the renowned brand trophy series in May on the Hockenheimring. Now, with 68 points, he holds the top position in the overall standings. Driving for tolimit/Seyffarth Motorsport, the German has a very special motivation to do well in the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben: For the 23-year-old, who lives about 100 kilometres south of Oschersleben, this is a home race.
Lying in wait just two points behind the leader is former DTM driver Thomas Jäger. Born in nearby Chemnitz, the MS Racing PZ Hamburg Nord-West pilot also regards the 3.7 kilometre circuit as a home track. After securing wins on the EuroSpeedway Lausitz and the Norisring in Nuremberg, the 32-year-old is hoping for another victory to catapult him into the points’ lead again.
After his first win ever in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland, Jeroen Bleekemolen (Netherlands) travels to the next round with recharged energy. The reigning Porsche Mobil1 Supercup champion ended a long dry spell recently on the dune circuit of Zandvoort, just several kilometres away from his parents’ house in Aerdenhout. His win marked the tenth in a Porsche makes cup series, but his first in the Carrera Cup.
Still waiting for his first victory is Nicki Thiim – but the 20-year-old Dane is breathing hard down the necks of the stalwarts. Having earned 56 points he sits just twelve points behind the leading Seyffarth. Thiim, as reigning champion of the Seat Leon Supercopa, contests his first season in the Carrera Cup Deutschland. In Hockenheim he claimed fourth and on the EuroSpeedway he crossed the finish line in third.
