Thomas Jäger secures third win of the season with dream start
Stuttgart. At the sixth round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland on the Nürburgring, Thomas Jäger (Germany) celebrated a clear triumph. The foundation for his success on the 3.6 kilometre Grand Prix circuit was the dream start for the MS Racing PZ Hamburg Nord-West pilot. Right at the beginning of the 23-lap sprint Jäger catapulted his 911 GT3 Cup from fourth on the grid to the front of the field, turned into the first corner as the leader and held the top position until the flag. After 36:05.015 minutes, the former DTM pilot crossed the finish line.Trailing the Munich racer by just seven-tenths of a second, Robert Renauer (Germany) received the flag in second position. The 24-year-old Farnbacher Racing pilot, who had qualified as third, also got away well at the start. With another podium result, Renauer shows that he has clearly made contact to the front-runners. Jan Seyffarth (Germany, tolimit/Seyffarth Motorsport) had to settle for third position. After the former Porsche Junior achieved his third pole position this season, he had to let Jäger and Renauer overtake him. In the final lap Seyffarth put in a renewed charge for Renauer but found no opportunity to pass him. In the overall rankings, Seyffarth and Jäger now share first place with 104 points.
Crossing the finish line in fourth and fifth positions were Jeroen Bleekemolen (Netherlands) and Richard Westbrook (Great Britain) competing for ARAXA RACING PZ Reutlingen. Like Seyffarth, Bleekemolen lost his second place from qualifying shortly after the start, and at one point even fell back to seventh. Putting in a super drive, the reigning champion and current points’ leader in the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup fought his way back in the tenth lap to rank fifth which we retained until the flag. His teammate Westbrook, who returned to the Carrera Cup as a guest driver, followed him across the finish line. The 34-year-old Briton, who last year contested the FIA GT Championship and Le Mans Series as Porsche works driver, can look back on many successes in the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup. Moreover, he claimed vice champion honours two years ago in the Carrera Cup Deutschland.
Sixth place went to Germany’s Florian Stoll, marking his best result with the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup so far this season. Ranking seventh, Brazilian Valdeno Brito (Konrad Motorsport) again finished amongst the top ten – despite the race on the Nürburgring being a premiere for him: up until he raced in the Carrera Cup he had only competed on South American race tracks. Positions eight to ten were occupied by Christian Engelhart (Germany, MRS Team PZ Aschaffenburg), Jimmy Johansson (Sweden, Hermes Attempto Racing) and David Sigacev (Russia, tolimit/Seyffarth Motorsport).
Thomas Jäger (winner): “My start went like a dream today. I had a fantastic reaction time and got away perfectly. I wasn’t that fast in the race, and that’s why things were tight right to the end. But I managed to hold on to my lead and now I’m overjoyed to have won.”
Robert Renauer (second): “The start was the crucial point. Thomas and I sneaked through the first row and the race ran smoothly for us. Around mid-race Jan put me under enormous pressure and I had to fight hard to defend my position – but this was great. I’m over the moon!”
Jan Seyffarth (third): “When you start from pole you want to win. Third today is anything but good. Okay, my start wasn’t that great but it wasn’t that bad either. In the race I was actually faster than the other two but I just couldn’t find a way past them. Now we have to concentrate on the last three championship rounds and see that we do better.”
