Bleekemolen wins in Spain – Jäger takes points’ lead
Stuttgart. Jeroen Bleekemolen (Netherlands, ARAXA RACING PZ Reutlingen) clinched his second win of the season at round seven of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland. The reigning champion and current points’ leader of the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup saw the flag first on the Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona (Spain) after a race shortened to 23 laps.Bleekemolen snatched the front position shortly after the start to lead the field into the first corner. Hot on his heels were Robert Renauer (Germany, Farnbacher Racing) and Jan Seyffarth (Germany, tolimit/Seyffarth Motorsport). Whilst accelerating out of the corner, fourth-placed Patrick Hirsch (Germany, Konrad Motorsport) touched the former Porsche-Junior Seyffarth, who spun, left the track and came to a standstill. Sebastian Asch (Germany, Schnabl Engineering) found no way around and hit the front left side of Seyffarth’s vehicle. Seyffarth’s teammate and compatriot Niclas Kentenich and David Sigacev (Russia) were also caught up in a collision. As a result of the incidents in the first corner, the safety car was sent out on the track. Later the race was stopped.
After the restart, Bleekemolen utilised his experience to draw away from his rivals. The 27-year-old Dutchman saw the flag as winner ahead of Robert Renauer after 58:05.828 minutes.
A thrilling fight for third raged between two guest starters Siso Cunill (Spain, Konrad Motorsport) and Sean Edwards (Great Britain) as well as Edward’s Hermes Attempto Racing teammate Jimmy Johansson (Sweden). In the penultimate lap, the 18-year-old Spaniard established himself ahead of the others and clinched third place in front of home crowds. Johansson and Edwards saw the chequered flag in positions four and five.
Sixth place went to Thomas Jäger (Germany, MS Racing PZ Hamburg Nord-West), who with 188 points now holds the drivers’ championship lead with two rounds left on the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland calendar. Ranking second overall is the 32-year-old former DTM pilot Jeroen Bleekemolen with 107 points followed by Jan Seyffarth in third with 104 points.
After the accident, Jan Seyffarth was transported to hospital with a broken thighbone. Sebastian Asch sustained no injuries but for safety reasons was also sent to a clinic in Barcelona for a medical check.
Jeroen Bleekemolen (winner): “Of course I’m pleased about winning, but much more important is that Jan and Sebastian are okay. I hope the two are alright and don’t have any other injuries. In any case, I wish them all the best.”
Robert Renauer (second): “My start was really bad. I can be happy that I got through the first lap, avoided getting caught up in the accident and ranked second. It’s great to have earned some decent points again. Onwards and upwards.”
Siso Cunill (third): “I’m incredibly lucky to secure third place in front of home crowds. I pulled out all stops to achieve this. I was determined to climb the podium and I did it. That’s fantastic.”
Thomas Jäger (sixth): “After the race was stopped I only thought about the points’ table. I had no interest in fighting for a race victory. And I was lucky enough not to be involved in the accident. The most important thing now is that everything goes well for the two.”
Television station DSF broadcasts highlights of the seventh championship round on Sunday evening in its “Motorsportmagazin” programme. N-TV telecasts a round-up in its “Speed” programme on Tuesday (22 September) and in the DTM Magazine on DMAX on Sunday (27 September).
