Thrills and suspense with the new 911 GT3 Cup
Stuttgart. With the new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, the most powerful Cup-911 by now, the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland takes off into its 21st season on 25 April. Since the inaugural race on the Hockenheimring in 1990, this prestigious race series has provided thrills and suspense from the first to the last lap.The grid alone promises to keep fans on the edge of their seats at the season-opener. Traditionally, seasoned professionals come face to face with talented, ambitious youngsters. The driver with the most experience by far is former DTM pilot Uwe Alzen (Germany). In 2007, the 42-year old pocketed his second championship title in the Carrera Cup Deutschland and can look back on many successful years at the wheel of Porsche sports cars: In 1992 he won the Carrera Cup for the first time, two years later he clinched overall victory at the international Porsche Supercup. In 1995 he won the ADAC GT Cup with Porsche, and in 1999 he secured class victory at the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours in the cockpit of a Porsche 911 GT3 R.
Ferdinand Stuck (Germany), the youngest son of racing legend Hans-Joachim Stuck, makes his debut in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland. The youngster began his motorsport career at the wheel of a kart before heading into the ADAC Formula Masters in 2008 and 2009. After performing impressively at the Porsche talent search in Vallelunga, the 18-year-old receives support this season as a “Porsche Motorsport Talent.”
Drivers face a new challenge this year with the latest Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. As the world’s best-selling racer with over 1,900 units built, it rolls to the grid with even more power: The output of the six-cylinder boxer engine has increased to 450 hp. To ensure equality of chances for all drivers, Porsche seals the engine and gearbox of all 911 GT3 Cup race cars. Teams are only permitted to alter the suspension, camber, track, ride height, anti-roll bars and tyre pressure within strict regulation limits. The same applies to rear wing adjustments. All cars are fitted with a Michelin control tyre. Per weekend and vehicle, two sets of new Michelin slicks are allowed for the qualifying and race. With these measures, the technical regulations preclude any material advantages for individual drivers.
Nine championship rounds make up this year’s calendar as support to the DTM. Six rounds are held on German tracks with three on other European circuits. Two new highlights have been added to the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland calendar: For the first time, the brand trophy series races in Valencia (Spain) on 23 May as well as in Brands Hatch (Great Britain) on 5 September.
