Estre celebrates win on the Norisring and extends overall lead
Stuttgart. In summer temperatures, the 34 competitors in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland displayed some action-packed racing on the narrow street course of Nuremburg’s Norisring. At the eighth of 17 races, Frenchman Kévin Estre (Attempto Racing) won ahead of Austria’s Norbert Siedler (Aust Motorsport) and Robert Lukas (FÖRCH Racing by Lukas Motorsport) from Poland. “At the walls of the Norisring centimetres decide between victory and defeat. My win today was precision work,” said a thrilled Estre. The mere 2.3 kilometre circuit turned into a challenge for the large starter field. Regarded as critical by all pilots, the first corner was tackled with impressive discipline. Estre quickly managed to gain several metres with his 450 hp Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, which is based on the lightweight 911 GT3 RS sports car. The 24-year-old, who has started three races from pole position so far this season, profited from the jockeying for positions behind him and held onto his lead to the flag ahead of Siedler. In the close fight for third place, Lukas kept his nose in front and secured his second podium result in the Porsche Carrera Cup ahead of Jaap van Lagen (NL/FE Racing by Land-Motorsport).
Sean Edwards (Team Deutsche Post by Project 1) made a sensational charge through the field: Due to a technical fault during qualifying the Briton took up the race from the 33rd grid spot but overtook one car after another and after 27 laps he saw the chequered flag in ninth place.
For the two Porsche Juniors Alex Riberas (Attempto Racing powered by Motorvision) and Connor de Phillippi (Förch Racing by Lukas Motorsport) this was their first race on the narrow street circuit. The 20-year-old American de Phillippi managed to post the eleventh quickest time in qualifying. “I’m really happy about finishing my race in eighth. There was a lot going on around me. I constantly had to watch that I wouldn’t be taken out,” said the Porsche Junior. The 19-year-old Spaniard Riberas started from position eight on the grid and crossed the finish line in 17th. “I battled with gearbox problems over the entire distance and couldn’t do better today. In Sunday’s race I’ll attack again,” explained Riberas.
In the overall classification of the Porsche Carrera Cup, Estre leads the field with 132 points over Christian Engelhart (D/Konrad Motorsport) with 103 points and Edwards (102 points). In the rookie classification, the Porsche Junior de Phillippi ranks first with 54 points ahead of his colleague Riberas (43 points).
