Timo Bernhard –The Record Winner Secures his First Major Title

Stuttgart. For three years Timo Bernhard from the German town of Miesau fought for national Carrera Cup, before everything finally came together perfectly in 2001 for the lively youngster. With four victories – more than any other Carrera Cup contestant in 2001 – the 20-year-old collected the trophy. The only low point came at mid-season when Bernhard became involved in a tussle with his team mate on the Sachsenring and retired.

Timo Bernhard lives for motor racing. He is constantly moving: Physically for his fitness, mentally in the quest to find a successful tactic or the best possible set-up for his 370 hp Porsche. Concentrating on his hunt for the title this year was not made particularly easy. Parallel to his motorsport engagement he also served his military service in the sports division of the airforce. At mid-season Bernhard flew to America to contest one of the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) rounds. He made an immediate impression.

After three years in the German Carrera Cup Bernhard is looking for new challenges: “Endurance racing in the USA is very interesting. The challenges are much more than sprints like the Carrera Cup. You have to bring the car quick and healthy over the distance. You have to share the cockpit with another driver and the whole team is more a part of the race action. The top touring car sport is of course extremely interesting and offers huge challenges, particularly on the technical side.“
