Uwe Alzen secures clear flag to flag victory
Stuttgart. Reigning champion Uwe Alzen (Germany) won the third round of the Carrera Cup Deutschland. The 40-year-old former DTM pilot, driving for the HP Team Herberth PZ Olympiapark, took up the 16-lap sprint in Mugello (Italy) from pole position and held onto his lead to the flag. Putting in an immaculate drive, he left his opponents no chance for victory on the 5.25 kilometre circuit in Tuscany. For the 1992 Carrera Cup champion and Porsche specialist, this marks his first win of the 2008 season.René Rast (Germany) crossed the finish line in second position, more than five seconds behind the winner. The 21-year-old hopeful got away well at the start from second on the grid, but was unable to pass Alzen in the first corner. With a faultless drive, the MRS Team PZ Aschaffenburg pilot saw the flag ahead of Nicolas Armindo (France). Armindo, competing for the ARAXA RACING PZ Reutlingen squad, also turned his qualifying performance in Europe’s fastest one-make series into a good race result. The 26-year-old started from third on the grid to climb the podium in third.
Joerg Hardt (Germany, HP Team Herberth PZ Olympiapark), experienced less luck after qualifying behind Armindo in fourth. In the eleventh lap, Hardt put the pressure on the Frenchman at the end of the finish straight, missed the braking point and spun into the gravel where he became stuck. Chris Mamerow (Germany, Mamerow RACING PZ Reutlingen) used the chance and slipped into fourth. In the final lap of the race, Mamerow lost this position to Jiri Janak (Czech Republic, Schnabl Engineering PZ Koblenz), who went on to claim fourth at the flag.
Former DTM pilot Thomas Jaeger (Germany) ranked sixth at the wheel of his Online Leasing Racing Team PZ Nürnberg 911 GT3 Cup. Trailing the German was the UPS-Porsche junior Marco Holzer (Germany). The 20-year-old youngster had taken up the sprint from seventh position, only to lose four places at the start. With a spirited effort he fought his way back up the field. Holzer secured seventh ahead of quadruple champion of the international Porsche Supercup, Patrick Huisman (Netherlands).
Bad luck plagued Holzer’s team mate, Martin Ragginger (Austria). The Porsche junior had qualified his Porsche on sixth but was forced back into the pits during the formation lap with a drive shaft problem and was unable to contest the race.
The fourth championship round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland takes place on Sunday (18th May) on the Eurospeedway Lausitz.
Uwe Alzen (winner): “What a fantastic race. At last I can take home 20 points, which is extremely important towards the championship. Now I have to wait to see how things go on the Eurospeedway. But I’m confident that we’ll be up there at the front again.”
René Rast (second): “I’m absolutely happy. Second was the best I could do today. I’m at the top of the points with Chris Mamerow and Nicolas Armindo and that’s great. My race went well. My team gave me a perfect car. And I can hardly wait until the next round.”
Nicolas Armindo (third): “We’ve put in another great performance this weekend. I’m now at the top in the championship points. For the next race I’m feeling optimistic that we can take another step forward. There is still a long way to go in the season, but the title is closer than ever.”
