Nicolas Armindo celebrates flag-to-flag victory in Nuremberg
Stuttgart. Nicolas Armindo from France is the winner of round five of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland. With an immaculate race over 35 laps, the ARAXA RACING PZ Reutlingen pilot left his rivals no chance and celebrated a clear flag-to-flag victory on the 2.3 kilometre Norisring circuit.Already in Saturday’s qualifying the 26-year-old put in an excellent performance by setting pole. After the lights went off for the race he led the field to the first corner and held his position even after a four-lap safety car phase which came as a result of a collision between Robert Lukas (Poland, SMS Seyffarth-Motorsport) and Jiri Micanek (Czech Republic, Micanek Motorsport PZ Inntal) in the first lap. Armindo crossed the finish line first on the city circuit in Nuremberg after 33:09.656 minutes. Current points’ leader René Rast (Germany) saw the chequered flag in an undisputed second. Rast had taken up the sprint from second on the grid to finish almost eight-tenths of a second behind Armindo. With this result, the MRS Team PZ Aschaffenburg driver further increased his lead in the championship.
The duel for the following positions provided extra suspense. Chris Mamerow (Germany) in particular was pushed hard after starting from fourth and making up one place. In the end phase the 23-year-old Team Mamerow Racing PZ Essen pilot came under pressure from his compatriot Jan Seyffarth. The 21-year-old, who competes for SMS Seyffarth-Motorsport, made an excellent start: He made up five places and entered the Grundig hairpin at the end of the finish line in fourth, to see the flag in fourth after Mamerow.
Both HP Team Herberth PZ Olympiapark pilots, Uwe Alzen and Joerg Hardt (both Germany) drove a controlled race. Hardt fell back to sixth from third position at the start. Alzen, the reigning champion of the Carrera Cup Deutschland, took up the race from eighth to move into fifth. The two experienced Porsche pilots held on to these positions to the flag.
The two UPS-Porsche Juniors, Martin Ragginger (Austria) and Marco Holzer (Germany) also concluded the race in formation flight. 19-year-old Holzer put his 20-year-old colleague from Austria under immense pressure in the second half of the race, but avoided taking any extreme risks to prevent a possible accident. Martin Ragginger claimed seventh with Marco Holzer securing eighth.
The next round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland takes place on Sunday (13 July) on the Dutch circuit of Zandvoort.
Nicolas Armindo (winner): “That was a fantastic race: Dream weather, dream run. Everything ran perfectly. My team put an excellent car on the track for me today. I had no other option than to win.”
René Rast (second): “I’m totally happy. Almost everything went to plan. My start wasn’t exactly great but I can’t complain. I drove a decent race and concentrated solely on the championship. My motto was: Don’t make a mistake! At the finish I could even pull away from Chris. Now I have to keep my cool and bring home as many points as possible from every race. And that means: squirrel those points away.”
Chris Mamerow (third): “Third place is okay. I had hoped to make up some more positions but it didn’t work. The front group were extremely constant. I couldn’t do more than I did. In the second sector I was going very well and kept Jan under control. Currently I’m second in the championship, but anything is possible. I’ll try to continue with my consistent performances and we’ll just have to see what happens.”
