Stuttgart. The qualifying for the sixth round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland in Zandvoort (Netherlands) was a lottery that was decided after just ten minutes: With two red flags and rain setting in, the times could not be improved. Under difficult track conditions last year’s winner Chris Mamerow (Germany, Mamerow Racing PZ Essen) secured his first pole position of the season in 1:42.967 minutes on the 4.3 kilometre Circuit Park Zandvoort. For the 23-year-old, however, the qualifying session was not without some bad luck: In an attempt to undercut his top time in Europe’s fastest one-make series, he slid into the gravel. The lengthy recovery operation led to an almost ten minute caution phase and ultimately a red flag. As the rain set in the qualifying was restarted but immediately stopped when another driver slid from the wet track into the gravel. The rain became a downpour which prevented any improvement on the times already set.
UPS-Porsche Junior Marco Holzer (Germany) planted his 420 hp 911 GT3 Cup on a sensational second. For the 19-year-old, who aside from the Carrera Cup contests six round of the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup, this marks his best starting position to date after two seventh placings in Mugello and at the Norisring. Jan Seyffarth (Germany, SMS Seyffarth-Motorsport) takes up tomorrow’s 19-lap race from third on the grid. Seyffarth, who celebrated his 22nd birthday today, also hails from the UPS-Porsche-Junior school. Seyffarth has already claimed a podium result with third in Oschersleben and currently sits fourth overall in the Carrera Cup.
Points’ leader René Rast (Germany, MRS Team PZ Aschaffenburg) takes off into the race through the dunes on the north-sea coast of the Netherlands from fourth. After winning the season-opening round and securing three second places, the 21-year-old sits 10 points ahead of pole-sitter Mamerow. Nicolas Armindo (France, ARAXA RACING PZ Reutlingen), clear winner of the Norisring round, qualified his Porsche on fifth for Sunday’s sprint. Alongside him in sixth is the two-time winner in 2008, Joerg Hardt (Germany, HP Team Herberth PZ Olympiapark). His team mate Uwe Alzen (Germany) starts from seventh on the grid. The reigning Carrera Cup champion has already secured one victory so far this season, but with two retirements currently ranks eighth in the drivers’ standings.
The final three positions in the top ten are occupied by UPS-Porsche Junior Martin Ragginger (Austria, UPS Porsche Junior Team) in eighth, local matador Patrick Huisman (Netherlands, Hermes Attempto Racing PZ Nürnberg) in ninth and his team mate Philipp Wlazik (Germany) in tenth.
Chris Mamerow (pole-sitter): “I’m happy. By now my weekend was perfect. My car felt extremely good so I hope we can turn these strengths into a good result in tomorrow’s race. Unfortunately during my second quick lap I drove over the track markings. It was so slippery I had no chance to control the car. But when you go to the limit then things like this happen.”
Marco Holzer (second qualifier): “That was a crazy qualifying! I’m over the moon to be on the front row – that’s the first time in two years. In the decisive laps at the beginning everything ran perfectly. My car was optimally set-up thanks to the great work of my team. Afterwards everyone in the pits was nervous. No-one knew if the rain would stop or become worse. But it was enough.”
Jan Seyffarth (third qualifier): “I’m very happy with third, particularly as I was held up somewhat. Otherwise I could have secured second. But I have a good starting position for the race. I hope that my start is good – as always – and I beat Marco to the first corner. Then Chris and I can enjoy a good fight.
The television station “Premiere” broadcasts the race in the Dutch Circuit Park Zandvoort tomorrow from 15.45 hrs. Additionally, “DSF” televises highlights on Sunday evening in its “DTM Highlights” programme.
