Thomas Jäger triumphs at 1,000th race
Stuttgart. For Thomas Jäger, his very first win in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland was at the same time a very special one: the 24-lap sprint on the EuroSpeedway went down in history as the 1,000th for a Carrera Cup race worldwide – and in the 20th season of the renowned brand trophy. Driving for the MS Racing PZ Hamburg Nord-West team, the 32-year-old pilot received the flag from Olaf Manthey, who won the first round of the Carrera Cup back in 1990 and who awarded Jäger the winner’s trophy on Sunday in front of 75,000 spectators.Aside from Manthey (1990 champion), who managed the Porsche Junior team in the Carrera Cup between 2006 and 2008 and won the Nürburgring 24 hour race in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 with various versions of the 911 GT3 and his own team, the jubilee race in the Lausitz was also witnessed by several other former Porsche champions. Roland Asch (1991 champion), Bernd Mayländer (1994 champion), Harald Grohs (1995 champion), Audi works pilot Mike Rockenfeller (2004 champion), Porsche factory driver Wolf Henzler (2004 Porsche Supercup champion) and the reinging Carrera Cup champion René Rast remember the renowned makes cup race series as a career launching platform. The unanimous opinion of the assembled champion group: Success in a Porsche sports car marked the transition from amateur to professional. In the meantime, the successful idea of the Carrera Cup has travelled around the world. This year, 13 Porsche one-make race series can be seen in 20 countries.
The prestigious 1,000th Carrera Cup victory went to Thomas Jäger after a gripping duel with Jan Seyffarth (Germany). Until the last race lap, the former Porsche junior who drives for tolimit/Seyffarth Motorsport this year attacked the pole-sitter Jäger, looking for a way to get ahead. With an immaculate drive, the former DTM pilot gave his 22-year-old pursuer no chance to win and crossed the finish line after 35:03.081 minutes in first. Seyffarth swept over the finish line 1.4 seconds later in second place.
Behind the two front-runners, a tough and exciting race was been battled out for third place by pilots in their 420 hp Cup-911. Immediately after the start, Nicki Thiim (Denmark, Hermes Attempto Racing powered by Pole Promotion) moved into third from fourth on the grid and initially began to pull away from his pursuers. In the third lap, however, the 20-year-old locked up the brakes and had to continue with a flat spot. From this point he lost up to two seconds to the leaders. From lap six, Niclas Kentenich (Germany, tolimit/Seyffarth Motorsport) as well as Christian Engelhart (Germany, MRS Team PZ Aschaffenburg) attacked the reigning champion of the Seat Leon Supercopa, who put in a brilliant drive to hold them off. Finally, with a renewed charge, the two pursuers touched in lap 17 and spun off.
Profiting from manoeuvre was Jeroen Bleekemolen (Netherlands, ARAXA RACING PZ Reutlingen): the 27-year-old reigning champion of the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup snatched sixth position right after the start from eleventh on the grid and trailed Thiim in fourth. In the final lap, the stalwart and youngster gave spectators a gripping show for the last podium position, claimed in the end by Nicki Thiim.
Fifth went to Robert Renauer (Germany, Farnbacher Racing), followed by Valdeno Brito (Brazil, Konrad Motorsport) and Sebastian Asch (Germany, Schnabl Engineering PZ Niederrhein) in sixth and seventh place.
Jiri Janak (Czech Republic, Hermes Attempto Racing) secured eighth ahead of Jimmy Johansson (Sweden, Hermes Attempto Racing powered by Pole Promotion) and Florian Scholze (Germany, MS Racing PZ Hamburg Nord-West).
Thomas Jäger (winner): “That was a crazy race. I got away superbly at the start and was constantly under pressure. Jan was just waiting for me to make a mistake. He didn’t let up. In the last third I profited from the fact that my team had put an excellently prepared car on the track for me. I’m over the moon about my first victory – and at the 1,000th Carrera Cup race at that. I will never forget this success.”
Jan Seyffarth (second): “What a great race. Second place is not bad. Thomas put in a very strong drive. I waited and waited for my chance to get ahead, but he simply didn’t make a mistake. Every so often I had to let him pull away slightly and I had no chance more to win. Now we have seven more races to go. For sure there will be a couple of good results left in there somewhere for me.”
Nicki Thiim (third): “That was huge fun, but at the same time extremely tough. I was at the limit the whole time in third and, because I flat-spotted my tyre I came under pressure. It helped slightly that my pursuers were fighting amongst themselves. It’s a great result to climb the podium at just my second Porsche race. I’m very happy.”
