Thriller on the Nuremberg street circuit
Stuttgart. A gripping start to the 20th season of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland: After the first two championship rounds, Thomas Jäger and Jan Seyffarth (both Germany) share the points’ lead with 38 points each. But their pursuers are lurking: Both Jeroen Bleekemolen (Netherlands) and Nicki Thiim (Denmark) lie just eight points behind the front-runners in second. Victory on Nuremberg’s Norisring, which is rewarded with 20 points, could reshuffle the names at the top of the championship points table. The 2.3 kilometre circuit is the shortest on the Carrera Cup calendar. The only street circuit of the season, however, is regarded as a true test of man and machine. Its specialities: there are only four corners – the Grundig-Kehre, the Schöller-S and the Dutzendteich-Kurve. Heading into the Grundig corner at the end of the finish straight, the 420 hp Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race cars brake from around 250 kph to 40 kph. In the race that translates into 35 times maximum load on the brakes.
In the circle of favourites on the Norisring are of course the reigning vice-champion and former Porsche junior Seyffarth, driving this season for tolimit/Seyffarth Motorsport, as well as ex-DTM pilot Jäger for his MRS Racing PZ Hamburg Nord-West squad. Both travel to the third round in Nuremberg with one win and a second podium result. For Jäger, his victory on the EuroSpeedway was a very special one: not only was it his first win but the 1,000th Carrera Cup race in the world.
Jeroen Bleekemolen (ARAXA RACING PZ Reutlingen) has high hopes for his first victory in the Carrera Cup. The reigning champion of the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup has climbed the podium at every round of the international brand trophy series so far this season, three of which he celebrated as the winner. In the Carrera Cup, the Dutchman has pocketed one third and one fourth place.
Breathing hard down the necks of the old-hands is Nicki Thiim (Hermes Attempto Racing powered by Pole Promotion). The 20-year-old Dane is the reigning champion of the Seat Leon Supercopa and contests his first season in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland. In Hockenheim he netted fourth, on the EuroSpeedway he saw the flag in third.
Television station SSN TV (www.ssn.tv) broadcasts the race on the Norisring live on Sunday (28 June) from 11.30 hours. In addition, the German TV station DSF televises a review of the race in its “Motorsportmagazin” programme on Sunday evening. Highlights can be viewed on N-TV in the “Speed” programme on Tuesday (30 June).
