Thomas Jäger celebrates lights off to flag win in Nuremberg
Stuttgart. Thomas Jäger (Germany) left his opponents no chance at the third round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland. After an immaculate race over 35 laps, the MS Racing PZ Hamburg Nord-West pilot celebrated a clear pole to flag win on the 2.3 kilometre Norisring circuit.Already in qualifying on Saturday, the 32-year-old former DTM pilot gave a great performance with pole position which he confirmed in the race. After the lights went off, he won the charge to the first corner and held on to his lead position even after a seven lap safety car phase which was the result of a collision between Niclas Kentenich (Germany, tolimit/Seyffarth Motorsport) and Robert Renauer (Germany, Farnbacher Racing). Thomas Jäger’s hunt on the street circuit in Nuremberg took 33:50.813 minutes. With his second win in succession, the German now sits in the lead of the overall standings of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland with 58 points.
Second place went to Brazilian Valdeno Brito, who came fifth last year in the Brazilian touring car championship and won the so-called One Million Dollar Race in Rio de Janeiro. The Konrad Motorsport pilot, who contests his first season in the Carrera Cup, took up the sprint from second on the grid and crossed the finish line just 29-hundredths of a second behind Jäger.
Last year’s winner here, Nicolas Armindo (France, ARAXA RACING PZ Reutlingen), who contested the race on the Norisring as a guest driver, brought his 420 hp Porsche 911 GT3 Cup home in third place. Starting from fourth on the grid, the Frenchman immediately settled himself into third early on in lap two ahead of ex-Porsche junior Jan Seyffarth (Germany, tolimit/Seyffarth Motorsport).
Giving spectators a thrilling show for fourth, 22-year-old Seyffarth held off a strong attack from his rivals until the penultimate lap. In the final phase he came under immense pressure from Jiri Janak (Czech Republic, Hermes Attempto Racing) and Nicki Thiim (Denmark, Hermes Attempto Racing powered by Pole Promotion). In the Schöller-S corner Janak made a decisive overtaking manoeuvre in the 34th race lap. At the same time, 20-year-old Thiim took his chance, which Seyffarth managed to counterattack. At the flag it was Janak in fourth, Seyffarth fifth, with Nicki Thiim, reigning champion of the Seat Leon Supercopa, in sixth.
Seventh was occupied by Philipp Wlazik (Germany, Hermes Attempto Racing), who saw the chequered flag ahead of the reigning champion of the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup Jeroen Bleekemolen (Netherlands, ARAXA RACING PZ Reutlingen). Rounding off the top ten were Robert Renauer and Patrick Hirsch (Germany, Konrad Motrosport) in ninth and tenth respectively.
Thomas Jäger (winner): “Two wins in a row – that’s fantastic! It was certainly not easy to stay in the lead today. We were constantly bumper to bumper and so I couldn’t afford to make one mistake.”
Valdeno Brito (second): “I’m over the moon. I never would have believed I could finish on the podium at just my second Porsche race. That’s great! Of course it’s mostly thanks to my team. They gave me a perfectly set-up car. It would be great if I could show my appreciation with a win this season.”
Nicolas Armindo (third): “The Norisring seems to suit me. After winning here last year and now securing third – that’s just great. Like last year, my team put a perfect car on the track for me today. I’m pleased I could bring home a podium result for the crew. It’s possible I could have done a little better but as guest driver I didn’t want to take any risks. Third place is better than nothing.”
Television station DSF broadcasts a summary of the third championship round in its programme “Motorsportmagazin” on Sunday evening (28 June). In addition, N-TV televises highlights from the Norisring in its “Speed” programme on Tuesday (30 June).
