First pole position for Nicolas Armindo
Stuttgart. After claiming position two on the grid twice, Nicolas Armindo has finally made the breakthrough on the EuroSpeedway Lausitz. The 28-year-old Frenchman from Hermes Attempto Racing set pole position in qualifying for round three of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland. With a lap time of 1.25.220 minutes on the 3.478 kilometre circuit, he relegated Robert Renauer (Germany, Herberth Motorsport PZ Olympiapark) to the second grid position by a mere 0.029 seconds. The Frenchman has a great deal of experience in Germany’s fastest brand trophy series. Out of the five seasons contested, Armindo’s best result came in 2005 with the vice championship. Thanks to his top time in the Lausitz, he asserts himself over points’ leader Nick Tandy (Konrad Motorsport) for the first time this season. The 25-year-old shooting star from Great Britain takes up his Lausitzring debut from third place after claiming two pole positions and two victories in succession.
Lining up on the grid alongside Tandy for round three of the season is Martin Ragginger (Schnabl Engineering). The former Porsche Junior from Austria had briefly led the time sheets, but fell back to fourth during the turbulent rush for top times towards the end of the session. After clinching third at the season-opening race, this marks his best qualifying result this season.
Sharing the third grid row are two young German drivers, Christian Engelhart (MRS Team PZ Aschaffenburg) and second in the points table Niclas Kentenich (Farnbacher Racing - PZN). With this, the 23-year-old and the 21-year-old continue their excellent qualifying performances to now. While Kentenich took home second in Hockenheim and fifth in Valencia to put him second in the points, Engelhart’s run of bad race luck has prevented him from earning any points.
The best of the three youngsters who receive support in the Carrera Cup as “Porsche Motorsport Talents” was this time Tim Sandtler. Driving for MRS Team PZ Aschaffenburg, the 23-year-old German notched up his best qualifying result to date with eleventh. Harald Schlegelmilch (Konrad Motorsport) from Latvia, who succeeded in finishing in the top ten in Valencia, takes up Sunday’s 24-lap race from 17th, with Ferdinand Stuck (Germany, Farnbacher Racing - PZN) in 20th.
TV station Motorvision broadcasts the race on 6th June live from 11.10 hours, Sport1 televises highlights from 21.30 hours. n-tv and DMAX air further magazine reports.
Nicolas Armindo (pole-sitter): “I already knew from free practice that my car was perfectly set-up for this track and was capable of the top time. But to actually achieve this amongst such strong competition is difficult. Now I have to finish the race without making any mistakes – then we can celebrate our first win of the season.”
Robert Renauer (second in qualifying): “My times improved brilliantly, but unfortunately I made a mistake on the brakes at the end of the finish straight otherwise I’d be pole-sitter right now. Still, it’s a very good result.”
Nick Tandy (third in qualifying): “I’m very pleased with my spot on the second grid row. I’ll try to attack tomorrow - my car is always excellently set-up for the races. It’s very close at the front, so spectators can expect some gripping racing.”
