Nicolas Armindo grabs pole in sweltering heat
Stuttgart. Experience was the trump card in qualifying for the fourth round of the Carrera Cup Deutschland. With a lap time of 51.837 seconds on the short 2.3 kilometre circuit, Nicolas Armindo planted his 911 GT3 Cup at the head of the field by a clear margin. This marks the second straight pole position for the 28-year-old Frenchman driving for the Hermes Attempto Racing squad, who claimed a flag-to-flag victory on the bumpy, tricky street circuit in Nuremberg two years ago. Taking up the race alongside Armindo on the front row is another Norisring specialist: the two-time Carrera Cup champion Uwe Alzen (Germany, Herberth Motorsport PZ Olympiapark) succeeded in securing his best qualifying result of the season in a 35 degree air temperature and a 52 degree asphalt temperature.The pole position is even more important for Armindo because his greatest rival in the fight for the title didn’t manage to secure a front row grid position. Rookie and points’ leader Nick Tandy (Great Britain, Konrad Motorsport) has already pocketed two pole positions and two victories from the first two rounds but had to settle for fourth on the grid. In contrast to Armindo and Alzen, Tandy has raced just once on the Nuremberg circuit, where he achieved 20th in a single-seater.
In third place, Martin Ragginger (Austria, Schnabl Engineering) secured a good starting position for the ‘hot’ race around the stone grandstands – and continues his upward trend. The former Porsche Junior took up the season-opener from ninth, took fifth at the second round and fourth at the third. And the young Austrian managed to climb the podium twice in position three so far this season.
With the fifth spot on the grid, Christian Engelhart (Germany) underlined his good form this season. Driving for MRS Team PZ Aschaffenburg, the 23-year-old was amongst the top contenders in qualifying from the last three rounds, claiming spot three on the grid at two races, and fourth at another meeting. At round three of the series on the EuroSpeedway Lausitz, Engelhart brought home an excellent fourth. Sean Edwards, one of the initial favourites of the series, experienced less luck. Competing for the Deutsche Post by tolimit team, he lines up for the sprint from sixth.
The youngsters who receive support from the factory as “Porsche Motorsport Talents” in the Carrera Cup, finished the qualifying in positions 13 and 18. Again it was the 22-year-old Latvian, Harald Schlegelmilch (Konrad Motorsport), who impressed with a spot near the top ten. Nineteen-year-old Ferdinand Stuck (Munich, Farnbacher Racing - PZN) took things easier after a slight off in free practice.
Television station Motorvision broadcasts the race live on 4 July from 10.25 hours (a repeat at 21.30 hours). Sport1 televises highlights at 21.15 hours. N-tv and DMAX show further magazine reports.
Nicolas Armindo (pole-sitter): “Great set-up, great driver, great lap time! Obviously we hit the nail on the head for qualifying. But the cards are reshuffled for the race. The competitors behind me are damn fast, you have to be so careful.”
Uwe Alzen (second qualifier): “Our goal was the third grid row, so you can imagine how we feel with the first. We worked hard in the races to now but we just didn’t manage to bring home the results. Now let’s see if we can turn our potential into a good race result and bring home a podium result.”
Martin Ragginger (third qualifier): “Third on the grid is better than our qualifying results to now. I think I missed out on a better spot because I made a mistake in braking and I ruined my tyres. For the race, it’s important to get away well at the start. Perhaps I can make up some positions.”
