Gripping head-to-head race for the title
Stuttgart. The fight for the title in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland is developing into a gripping head-to-head race between Nicolas Armindo and Nick Tandy. Travelling to round five at the Nürburgring on 8 August, the Frenchman, driving for Hermes Attempto Racing, holds a narrow lead over his British Konrad Motorsport rival. Heading to the race in Germany’s Eifel region the results of the two title aspirants are virtually identical: Both Armindo and Tandy have two pole positions and two race victories up their sleeves. It doesn’t get more even than that. For the Nürburgring, there is no clear favourite. The traditional circuit hasn’t proved lucky for Nicolas Armindo in the past. Only in 2005 during his second season in Germany’s fastest brand trophy series, the ambitious racer from Alsace took home the trophy for second place. Rookie Nick Tandy, who lost the points’ lead with a puncture on the Norisring, starts on the challenging Nürburgring for the first time in a Cup racer.
With this situation in mind, pursuers of the leading duo sense their opportunity. Above all, Schnabl Engineering pilot Martin Ragginger, who ranks third after three third places. Having lived in the Eifel for a time while contracted as a Porsche Junior, the Austrian feels confident: Claiming second place here in 2008, he has shown that the race track suits him – and he has also tested on the Nürburgring recently with his 450 hp Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. “During our tests we found an excellent set-up,” he says, while stating clearly that he hasn’t relinquished hopes for the title. “We’re only 15 points off the leader. Without my bad luck at the Valencia race, I would now possibly be at the head of the points’ table. Our aim in the Eifel is victory – and then the cards will be reshuffled.”
It would be prudent, however, for the Austrian to take a glance in his rear vision mirror. Snatching second place on the Norisring, seasoned racer Uwe Alzen from Germany (Herberth Motorsport PZ Olympiapark) made an impressive comeback and now ranks fourth in the overall classification just one point shy of Martin Ragginger. His German teammate Robert Renauer as well as Niclas Kentenich (Germany, Farnbacher Racing - PZN) also hope for top results on the Nürburgring to reel in the front-runners.
Two youngsters, who receive support as “Porsche Motorsport Talents”, also have their eyes on earning more championship points. Latvia’s Harald Schlegelmilch (Konrad Motorsport) has managed to finish once in the top ten, with Ferdinand Stuck from Munich pocketing a handful of points in his apprenticeship year driving for the Farnbacher Racing – PZN squad.
TV station Motorvision broadcasts the race on the Nürburgring on 8 August live from 10.15 hours (repeat 21.30 hours) with Sport 1 showing highlights at 21.00 hours. n-tv and DMAX also televise magazine reports.
