Riveting three-way fight for the title
Stuttgart. The fight for Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland title is turning into a cliff-hanger. Heading to the seventh of nine rounds in Brands Hatch on 5 September, three pilots have chances to become champion of the prestigious series: Nicolas Armindo (France), Nick Tandy (Great Britain) and Uwe Alzen (Germany). Germany’s fastest brand trophy series races on the classic British track for the first time. At only 1.929 kilometres in length, the circuit with its challenging corners offers drivers very little chance to catch a breath over the 42 laps.Travelling to the premiere at the top of the points is Nicolas Armindo. Up until recently, the Hermes Attempto Racing pilot from France had held a very comfortable points’ advantage. However, after a disappointing result at the previous race in Zandvoort the gap has shrunk to just nine points. Waiting and ready to pounce are two strong rivals who are level on points, Nick Tandy (Konrad Motorsport) and Uwe Alzen (Herberth Motorsport PZ Olympiapark). As local hero, Nick Tandy holds all the aces in his hand at Brands Hatch. He knows the circuit inside out from his many races there, and is confident he can turn it to his advantage and bring home his fourth win of the season. “Brands Hatch is my absolute favourite track,” he says. “To get the most out of it you have to drive very precisely and negotiate every corner perfectly. That’s just what I like.”
Double Carrera Cup champion Uwe Alzen only knows the Brands Hatch circuit near London from a one-day test there. This is also the case for his fourth-ranked teammate Robert Renauer. “You almost feel like you’re driving on the kart track, because the venue is so compact,” says Renauer. “But, the first corner is extremely tricky. It reminds me of bottoming out at the famous Eau Rouge in Spa – it’s definitely not for the faint-hearted.”
Schnabl Engineering has also prepared for the race by testing at Brands Hatch. After securing three victories this season for the team and now sitting fifth overall, Martin Ragginger (Austria) is keen to reduce the gap to the leader. Latvia’s Harald Schlegelmilch (Konrad Motorsport) from the junior scholarship “Porsche Motorsport Talent” programme is also eager to continue yielding fine results this season and bring home more points.
Television station Motorvision broadcasts the race live on 5 September from 16.05 hours (repeat 20.30 hours), with Sport1 showing highlights on race day at 20.30 hours and on 9 September at 22.30 hours in the Carrera Cup Magazin.
