Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland, round 7 in Brands Hatch

Two title favourites in first grid row

Stuttgart. Like straight out of a thriller! The two title rivals in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland take up the seventh round of the season alongside each other on the first grid row. Nick Tandy profited from his home advantage – but by a narrow margin. On the short 1.929 kilometre track, the Konrad Motorsport pilot from Great Britain planted his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup on pole in a time of 45.620 seconds. A mere 0.040 seconds behind, points’ leader Nicolas Armindo (France) from Hermes Attempto Racing secured the second grid spot.

With this, the 42-lap race not only promises huge suspense, but also marks the final spurt of the championship. For Tandy, three-time winner this season, this is the fourth pole position in his first year in Germany’s fastest brand trophy series. For Armindo, also with three wins to his credit this season, second place feels twice as good. Firstly, because he has bounced back with force after his personal low point recently in Zandvoort, and secondly because the Frenchman has never before raced on the home track of his toughest rival, Tandy.

Snatching the third grid position, Martin Ragginer, currently sitting fifth overall, underlined his goal of not losing contact to the leaders. The Austrian looks back on a season of mixed fortunes with three third places and two DNFs, neither of which were his fault. Taking up the race alongside him in the second row is his teammate Stefan Wendt from Schnabl Engineering – with a surprising fourth as the German’s best qualifying result.

Sharing the third grid row are Jeroen Bleekemolen and Christian Engelhart. The Dutchman, last year’s champion of the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup and vice-champion of the Carrera Cup Deutschland, competes in England as a guest driver for Konrad Motorsport. Engelhart (MRS Team PZ Aschaffenburg) takes up the race on the challenging roller coaster circuit from sixth. At every qualifying session so far, the German has posted times in the top ten. But having been hampered by bad luck in the seven of nine races by now, he only ranks eleventh in the overall classification.

The team pairing from Herberth Motorsport PZ Olympiapark shares the fourth grid row. Robert Renauer from Germany was in front by a nose, confirming his good qualifying form. For Uwe Alzen, his teammate behind him, eighth is a bitter disappointment. The German travelled to Great Britain ranking third in the championship and now sees Tandy and Armindo pulling out of reach at the head of the grid.

TV station Motorvision broadcasts the race on 5 September live from 16.20 hrs CEST (local time 15.20 hrs), with repeats following at 20.30 hrs. Sport 1 televises highlights on race day at 20.30 hrs and on 9 September at 22.30 hrs in the Carrera Cup Magazin.

Nick Tandy (pole-sitter): “After my first best time I thought, that’s it, no one can get me. But then the others pulled out all stops and I really had to call on all my experience from more than 30 races here to set pole. Without doubt, this will be a super exciting race, the English fans really have something to look forward to.”

Nicolas Armindo (second in qualifying): “I’m totally satisfied with the lap times just behind Nick. After all, I’ve never driven here. Unfortunately I made a tiny error on my fastest lap. Now it’s about total concentration on getting a good start and earning as many points as possible.”

Martin Ragginger (third in qualifying): “Oh well, two others were faster! But apart from that I’m pleased with my performance and I’m happy that my Schnabl teammate Stefan starts alongside me. We know now from free practice that we are consistently fast over the distance, but it’ll be very hard to overtake on this narrow circuit.”
