Perfect season start for Frenchman Estre in Hockenheim
Stuttgart. Kévin Estre (Attempto Racing) has won the first race of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland season in Hockenheim. At Saturday’s race on a dry track, the 24-year-old Frenchman beat Sean Edwards (Team Deutsche Post by Project 1) from Great Britain and Germany’s Christian Engelhart (Konrad Motorsport). “I’m thrilled to kick off the year like this. After the start I was able to control the race. It was great fun”, Estre said.Spectators in Hockenheim witnessed a gripping race, which ultimately ended behind the safety car after an accident involving Elia Erhart (Aust Motorsport). In lap seven, the German wound up in the crash barriers after a spin and the difficult recovery of the vehicle resulted in a safety car phase from the eleventh lap. When Estre received the flag after lap 14, he celebrated his second success in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland after his victory last season on the Nordschleife.
Taking up the sprint from pole position, Estre went on to dominate the race. But stalking him was a group of pursuers, Engelhart, Edwards and the Dutchman Jaap van Lagen (FE Racing by Land – Motorsport). Twenty-six-year-old Engelhart was sitting in second place up until the tenth lap when Edwards overtook him. Once the safety car came out, the chasing pack was no longer able to retaliate.
The new Porsche Juniors celebrated their debut in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland. America’s Connor de Phillippi (Förch Racing by Lukas Motorsport) handled his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup well and saw the flag in tenth position. “Not a bad start to the new season. I’m happy. In race two I want to be amongst the top ten again,” said the 20-year-old, who now leads the rookie classification. Spain’s Alex Riberas (Attempto Racing powered by Motorvision) was pleased with twelfth position.
Due to the large number of 35 starters, a new qualifying format was introduced this weekend. Initially all pilots took part in the split session and the second best qualifying time determined the grid line-up for race one. In the second session, only the top 15 drivers fought for the pole position of race two. The places from position 16 were determined on the basis of the best times from session one. As a result, Estre and Engelhart locked out the first grid row for Saturday’s race and also secured the front spots for Sunday.
