Angelique Kerber wants a third Stuttgart title
Stuttgart. Dream field at the 40th anniversary: eight Top 10 players will be competing at the 2017 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in the Porsche Arena. Heading the crème de la crème of women’s tennis will be Angelique Kerber. The world No. 1 will be chasing a new record in Stuttgart from 22 to 30 April as she will be aiming to become the first German to register a hat-trick of wins at the long-established tournament.“Stuttgart is my home tournament. I’m looking forward to the special atmosphere and the fantastic crowd,” said the title-holder who enjoyed the best and most successful season of her career in 2016. In addition to her wins at the Australian Open, US Open and in Stuttgart, she reached the Wimbledon final, won the silver medal at the Rio Olympic Games and was runner-up at the WTA Finals in Singapore. “Winning the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix for a third time after all the successes would be another career highlight,” continued the Porsche Brand Ambassador.
Angelique Kerber will be joined in the line-up by Dominika Cibulkova (Slovakia), her opponent in the Singapore final, and Agnieszka Radwanska (Poland), the current world No. 3 and the winner of the 2015 WTA Finals. In addition to Simona Halep (Romania) and Svetlana Kuznetsova (Russia), who have been at the top of the game for long while, tennis fans can also look forward to young up-and-coming players whose paths this past season rose risen steeply up and into the top echelon of the WTA Rankings and who will dispute Angelique Kerber’s claim to the tennis crown in 2017: Karolina Pliskova (Czech Republic), the German’s opponent in the US Open final, Madison Keys (USA) and Garbine Muguruza (Spain), who celebrated her maiden Grand Slam success at the French Open. It means the same eight players that contested the WTA Finals for the season’s best in Singapore will also be appearing in Stuttgart.
“We’re delighted that we can again present our audience at the 40th Porsche Tennis Grand Prix with a top line-up equal to those at Grand Slams,” said Tournament Director Markus Günthardt. “The fact that so many top players have once again decided to come to Stuttgart is a big show of trust in us and an indication that the total package is right. Players that have been here once before always want to come back.”
